This morning, at an ungodly hour, I woke up, took a shower, and biked off to a talk hosted by the Baker Institute of Public Policy titled, Through the Sallyport to China. Jo Ling Kent is an associate producer and web journalist at CNN, Beijing Bureau. I’ll admit I mostly decided to go because she has the same name as me, and she is half-Chinese, but I think I needed a pep talk during this...

Wish List Item #1: Delirious New York →
Regarded as one of the most essential books on an architect’s bookshelf, I want to read about Rem Koolhaas’ fascination with New York. I love New York!

Too Impatient for Reading
With Twitter feeds, Google Reader, and text messages, my attention span for reading is short. I scroll through my RSS feeds, click on the most interesting articles, look at the picture, and click on the star to store the article for future reference (i.e. recipes). Now a days, I can’t get past more than a few sentences or a paragraph before clicking on another article or setting down a book....

2010 Year in Review: Top Ten Greatest Moments
Someday, somewhere - anywhere, unfailingly, you’ll find yourself, and that, and only that, can be the happiest or bitterest hour of your life. - Pablo Neruda
Since the end of high school and the beginning of college, I feel like I have found pieces of myself each year. Whether it was discovering the power of design in school or rediscovering my love for travel over the summers, every year I have...

METRO, A Measure of Behavior
CSP10 - Entry 05 - Beijing
From my 64 days in Shanghai and counting, my theory is that if you aren’t a pusher in Shanghai yet, you better become one.
In Beijing, it’s another story.
Maybe it was because of the time of the day or the subway line that we were using, but Beijingers are just so much more civilized. Is it because of the police, government, or foreign diplomats that...

Smiling Game
CSP10 - Entry 04 - Shanghai
Did you know that it takes less muscles to smile than to frown? 50 muscles to frown and 13 to smile.
My guess is that Shanghai-ers need 50 muscles to smile and 13 to frown.
If I had to say which city had the friendliest people, I would most definitely not pick Shanghai. For the past two months, I have noticed that catching a person smiling in Shanghai is nearly...

Fake or Real
CSP10 - Entry 03 - Xi’an
China’s very first Qin emperor was afraid to die alone, so he had 700,000 craftsmen sculpt 8,000 soldiers, 130 chariots, 520 horses, and 150 calvary horses to accompany him on his journey to the heavens. In 1974, some local farmers near Xi’an discovered terracotta sculptures while drilling a water well. That is how the story goes, and every day...

EAT ME.
CSP10 - Entry 02 - Guangzhou
It’s true. The Chinese love their food, and the Shanghainese are proud of their food. They gloat, “Nothing can be compared to what Shanghai has to offer.” After spending two months in Shanghai, I identify myself as a Shanghai-er, and I am most certainly proud of our food. But after being in Guangzhou under the special treatment of the...

Stereotype Me Not
CSP10 - Entry 01 - Hong Kong
Don’t judge a book by its cover. Why not? In high school, you did it.
Black hair - Asian - Nerd. Blonde hair - Southern U.S. - Cheerleader. Brown hair - South American - Cholo.
But what happens when you are in a group of 200 Chinese students? We have already been narrowed down to our Chinese roots. How do we distinguish ourselves among the sea of...

Shanghai Amusement Park Thumbs Down →
Day 24 - Happy Valley, Songjiang, Shanghai
I finally met up with my sister’s friend’s friend, and she had tickets to Happy Valley, an amusement park in Shanghai sponsored by the ice cream company, Magnum. Right when we got in, there was a red carpet lined up for us to walk on, and ladies and gents lining the red carpet with ice cream bars in their hands. It was like walking into Willy...

Beginning of the Countdown
11 more days till I go home.
2 more weeks till Shanghai, BABY!
Final review is tomorrow, and while I am disappointed with how fast we had to pump everything out for this final project, I am sure glad that it will all be over soon! Alex and I worked really hard to make this project work, and no matter what happens tomorrow, we worked really hard to have a project and I am so proud of our...
