Day 48: Joanna & Julia

Number of Mosquito Bites: 9

In Julie & Julia, Julie spent the whole year cooking her way through Julia Child’s recipe book. While I would love to do something like that later in my life (maybe when I am retired), today I made dinner in another country by myself for the first time. I made a traditional Chinese dish called, scrambled eggs and tomatoes. The ingredients cost more than just buying the dish at the restaurant/canteen “Growl”on Anshun Road, but it was definitely worth all the time and taste! I had to go to Lianhua, the supermarket near my house, then go to two street vendors to buy some rice and tomatoes. I asked the street vendor if I could buy a pound of rice in Shanghainese, and I forgot that China doesn’t use “pounds.” Yes, wrong move on my part.

I didn’t get to eat until around 9pm when I finished prepping and cooking, but there was something about actually using the kitchen at my apartment and sitting at the dining table that made everything worth it. Home cooked meals may take a long time to prepare and a lot of effort, but it always feels a lot better knowing that you made it yourself.
